So far, this project has made me see many things I have never understood nor heard of before like actually living underwater for more than like 30 seconds. The second video I have watched was about a guy named Fabien Cousteau who presented a ted talk explaining what he learned while living underwater for 31 days. His presentation really hit home when he talked about how technology is changing how people discover things. One example he showed was a camera called the edgertonic that is able to capture 20,000 frames per second. The camera was made available to him because it was a prototype from some college students, but it's now available to the public with a small fee of 3,000 dollars. One scenario this camera was able to see, was a Manta shrimp trying to catch a fish with its claws.
To the naked eye, it might have been nearly a coincidence that you looked at the exact place at the right time and saw a really quick movement. The camera on the other hand, allows humans to see the scene in great detail, frame-by-frame. New technology is allowing scientist to learn how much strength was in the Manta Shrimp. The strength of the Manta is the same as a .22 caliber bullet. Watching this video made me realize that technology changes the way we learn about things whether we are watching a video or blogging. For example one way they used the slow motion camera to advance common knowledge was when they captured the Manta shrimp attempting to catch the fish. Without the camera they wouldn't be able to calculate the speed, strength, and maybe the kind of fish it was trying to eat. As technology increases so does are understanding of things.
This Ted Talk reminded me that I really enjoy learning about the variety of things that live underwater. From small coral pieces to giant grouper, each has many things about it that we haven't learned. But While Fabien Cousteau lived underwater he learned about 10 years worth of science in 31 days because of all the advanced technology available to him and his crew. The biggest one being there underwater house allowing them to sleep underwater for 31 days. One thing I admire about him was that he dreams about discovering and doing things that haven't been done like exploring the oceans of mars and building underwater cities that people can actually live in.
